In this article you are going to learn about “8 steps to create a website“. I will try and go in detail so it is easy to understand even if you are a beginner but at the same time, I’ll try to keep the article as short as possible. If you are familiar with some of the steps to website creation or if you are quick in understanding all the steps below, you should be able to finish creating your website in 5 minutes but if you are new then you might take about 10-15 minutes. Now, to setup a website you will need two things – good webhosting and a domain name. For those of you who are completely new to creating a website let me give you a brief understanding of what a domain name and web-hosting is. For those of you who have a good understanding of domain names and webhosting you can skip directly to the steps by scrolling down to Step 1.
Domain Name: A domain name is a “unique name” that can be used by people on the internet to browse your website. You can go to any “Internet domain registrar” and register your name and like your finger prints which are completely unique, a domain name is also one of a kind and there cannot be two of them. For example, if you purchase a domain name for a period of 10 years you are the sole owner of the domain name for the next 10 years and nobody can claim it unless and until you stop paying for the domain name. In another scenario you can even sell your domain to someone else for whatever amount you want – let’s say you bought a domain for $10 and someone named “John” purchased it for say $1000, you will now have to transfer it to him and he then becomes the new owner which is sort of like how you buy and sell a house in the real world, only here buying is a lot cheaper if you are buying a new domain name.
Webhost: Once you have purchase a domain name you will need to have some place to store everything you put on the website and for that you will need a webserver. For most people it is not possible to have a huge webserver to store all the information on the website especially if you have a lot of people visiting your website regularly from different parts of the globe, plus it is a huge investment and requires regular maintenance in order to be online 24/7. This is why you will need a good “Internet hosting service” to store your files and they worry about all the maintenance and you focus on creating content for the website.
Now let’s start off with the steps. If you get confused or find it difficult to understand don’t worry, leave a comment below and you will get help but please make sure you follow all these steps very carefully.
Choose your “Domain name” and purchase it from a domain registrar. I would recommend Godaddy because I am using them right now and they are awesome. Before you proceed to step 2, please know that right now Bluehost is offering new customers a free domain name along with any purchase from their hosting service. So if you haven’t bought a domain name yet go directly to step 2 and make sure you get the free domain name along with the hosting. But in my opinion it might be best to keep the domain name and hosting with two different companies respectively to avoid problems later on.
Choose a “Hosting service”. You can sign up with any hosting service but right now let’s try bluehost since they are one of the oldest and best in the business. You can use my affiliate link to go their website by clicking HERE.
Once you are on their website, click on the “get started now” button and move on to the next step.
Choose your hosting plan.
Bluehost has three options for the hosting plans a Basic or Starter plan, a Plus Plan and finally a Pro Plan. Depending on your requirements you can choose the plan that suits you best. If you want to go in for a plan that is somewhere in between in terms of features and value for money, I feel like the Plus Plan is the best but you should pick the one you think is the best.
Basic Plan: This plan lets you host one website and this should be enough for a personal website or a blog, you can go for a much higher plan if you want but for a single website this is more than enough for most people.
Plus Plan: If you are looking to host multiple websites you can choose this plan. The number of websites you can host here is exactly 10 or less than 10. You can host a single website too in this plan if you like but to be honest you may not require so much space for one website. However, some people do prefer this plan because of the additional benefits that come along with it that is not included in the previous plan like the $150 marketing offer and a Global CDN and so on, so if you want some extra stuff I say go in for this plan.
Pro Plan: If you are just starting out or if you are creating a website for the first time I’m sure you will not need this plan. It might be a good idea to try out the basic or plus plan for a while and if you see that you need more space and more websites hosted you can choose this plan. If you opt for this plan you will be given the option to host unlimited websites with unlimited amount of space. You also get everything you get from the previous plan along with additional free stuff like domain privacy, dedicated IP and siteback along with $180 worth of stuff for the year, which actually shows that the more you pay the better they take care of you.
After you select your plan type in your new domain name if you do not have one already OR if you have already purchased a domain name then select the box on the right and enter in the domain name you own and click on “next”.
Again, as mentioned earlier in Step 1, all the above plans give you one domain name for free, so you will not be paying for a domain name only the hosting if you don’t already have a domain name. When choosing a domain name there might be cases wherein the domain name may not be available, in that case you will have to try choosing a completely different name or try a variation of the name you want for your site.
Once you have selected your domain name you will see a page that looks like the one in the image below. Enter in all your details and check all the fields to make sure everything is correct and just the way you want it to be, then enter in your billing information and click to agree to the terms and conditions. After double checking again to make sure everything is in order click the “submit” button.
Once you have finished making your payment you will receive an email from Bluehost along with all the billing information. Once you’ve completed all the above steps you will see a page that looks like the one below.
You can then enter in your user name and password and click on “submit”. Also, it might be a good idea to write down your password and username somewhere and keep that information secure. What I usually do is send it to multiple email addresses so if I happen to forget my information I know where to find them.
Now what you need is a content management system like WordPress which you will see once you log into Bluehost with your username and password. There are others like Weebly and Joomla but WordPress is used by most of the websites on the internet because it’s easy to use and give you access to a lot of features and themes that can help you with your content creation and enhance your website’s interface.
You can now log into Bluehost’s cpanel.
Click on “Wordpress”.
You will now see an option to install WordPress. Click on “Install”.
Once you are done with that you will see a page that looks like the one below. Here you will just have to make sure the domain name you bought earlier is displayed in the field and leave the box that says directory as it is then click “Check Domain”.
Once Bluehost is done checking you will see a page that looks like the one below and once you tick the box that says “Show advanced options” you can make changes to the site name or title and even your admin and password. Once you are done, click and agree to the terms and conditions and then click “Install Now”.
After the above step is complete you are done, Bluehost will start creating your website and you will see a progress bar at the top right side of the next page. Once that is complete you will be taken to a new page that says “Your installation is complete!” and at the right hand side at the top you can click on “View Credentials” which will show you how to login.
Congratulations you now have your own website. Next thing you do is login to take a look at the dashboard for your new website.
All you have to do now is go to “Appearance” and pick out a template you like, then you can start putting up content on your website. Once you have enough content you can monetize your website to make money from it and once you start making a good amount of money you can make the website pay for itself which will then give you the option of adding in some more extra features to make your website even better. If you still have problems installing WordPress leave a comment below or contact Bluehost or WordPress directly for a faster and better answer to your questions. All the best!!!
